Pulls 08/22/2012

Another week comes, another week goes, and we have a new stack of pretty pictures and words. This fourth week is quickly becoming that hodgepodge of left overs week. Weeks one and two are primarily the Dark and Vertigo books. Week three gets to be the Green Lantern week. And this week we get my regulars of Justice League Dark, All-Star Western, and New Guardians.

There is some Spider-Man involved, but issue 692 is going to get a special, since it gets to be the uber expensive 50th anniversary issue.

Oh, and the final issue of Deadpool Kills the Universe. Bloody hell.

And remember, spoiler free zone. Well, except for the rant at the end, I just don't care anymore about keeping that one clean.

DC Families Review: The Dark

A few things to get out of the way. First off, for those who don’t know, DC has broken their books up into separate families. And over the course of the next few weeks I, James, plan on doing quick reviews of each family and their books, how their stories are going, what I hope to see, that type of things. I am also hoping to get Dan and Garrett to do this as well and get their opinions on their favorite/least favorite families. So let’s kick this off with my favorite, THE DARK.

For any regulars out there you may have heard that my picks of the week aren’t books we talk about on the show, for some, I’m the only one reading them, others, well, just isn’t brought up for time’s sake. But I am a huge fan of THE DARK.  A quick rundown of the books: Swamp Thing, Animal Man, Justice League Dark, Demon Knights, I Vampire, Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E., and Demon Knights. (Recent addiction Dial H, though we won’t cover that for the moment.)

Another week, another screw up

It seems to be how things work here, we can't seem to get a podcast out every week like we would like. So here is just a quick look at what we pulled, and some brief thoughts. Remember, spoilers as always.

All-Star Western:
Arkham is the best addition to this book. He spends most of the opening getting high on opiates and getting hookers. When caught, he claims in the name of medicine. Jonah while this goes on, gets in fights, joins a cause, and is betrayed by that cause. Of course, he was going to betray that cause in the first place, but that is neither here nor there.

Green Lantern: New Guardians:
Arkillo finds out what happens to the Sinestro Corps. We find out how we'll keep a yellow lantern in this book. Nothing much else, sadly.

Justice League Dark/I Vampire:
Both of these bad boys together. They are a continuing story of the rise of Cain, and it's pretty badass. I don't want to give to much away, because I recommend these books over most others, but be assure, Constantine is a prick, and we love him for it. Andrew Bennet will rise again, and he will be awesome. Otherwise, pick up these books.

Daredevil:
While Dan has his new Marvel favorite in Scarlet Spider, mine is Daredevil. I picked up the first issue of Mark Waid's run on the book and loved it instantly, and dug around for the past month finding all the back issues. I can't recommend this series enough. But this issue is the conclusion to the Omega Effect, a story that spanned Avenging Spider-Man, and the Punisher. It's a good conclusion to the story, and I would advice people to get the other books. I've also gotten interested in the Punisher, so I will get back to you next month on whether that's any good.

I know Dan probably has more he'd like to talk about, so I'll see what he wants to say, and this will be that place holder for whatever he has.

Event Fever:
Avengers vs. X-Men. Yay. This event so far is a mixed bag for me. The premise is a little lame, Scott's an ass and a half, and Wolverine is all emo whiny bitch. But this week is tie-in week, and so we look at those. Most are barely tie-ins. And I'll be honest, I haven't read Secret Avengers yet, and that is a legit Tie-in. Uncanny X-Men was alright, but having not read X-Men in so long, Juggernaut Colossus is just weird. So we will talk about what is my favorite book of the series so far. A vs X. The fight book.
For those who don't know, there is a fight book. a once a month bare knuckle brawl fight book. And it's stupid. Soooo stupid it's hilarious. Of course one should remember that these fight books aren't technically in continuity with the regular book, and if you look at both fights provided, Magneto vs. Ironman, and The Thing vs Namor, you will see they don't quite match up to the regular event book.
But the opening text of the book basically goes, screw continuity, this is for fun. And boy is it fun.

Pick of the week.
James: It's so hard to choose. even the books I didn't talk about were fun. But if I'll be honest, I will probably get more enjoyment out of the sheer stupidity of A vs. X then most of these other books, so if you want just a constant laugh at bad, get that book.
